Starting A Veg Patch

Many people are wanting to grow vegetables and maybe you are as well. I have been growing vegetables for 40 years and I can show how you can start to grow your own vegetables.

Now, how much room do you have to start a garden? The thing is that you can start growing in any space. Whether this is pots or a raised bed or a patch of grass that you want to start growing vegetables in.

In all the years I have been growing I still don’t have favourite vegetable varieties, I like to chop and change, but one thing is important to me is that the vegetables are easy to grow, some vegetables are harder to grow and sometimes the climate isn’t right for the vegetables you may want to grow.

What you can grow really depends on the area you are going to grow the vegetables. I have a neighbour and she is so good with growing veg in pots, and I am always amazed at what produce she gets. She has a small area about 1 meter by 2 meters and she grows broad beans and peas in that, the rest she grows in pots, she grows radishes, chillies, tomatoes, and carrots, she also grows some runner beans in pots.

One thing is important you should try and grow the vegetables that you like to eat. I am growing carrots this year in pots and am thinking of growing courgettes in large pots, I have some 12 and 14inch pots that are quite deep around 16” to 18”. This allows me to grow some other stuff in my veg patch.

A sunny and sheltered spot is best for vegetables, vegetables do not like the wind when they are establishing, they can take it better was the plants are established. But most plants grow better in sheltered areas and they will also produce more veg for you.  We use various contraptions to keep our plants warm and get them growing and producing vegetables for us.

Weeds; they are the pain for the gardener, and if you allow them to grow to much they can take over, we try and mulch around the plants, so for instance when we cut the grass (we don’t use fertilizer or weedkiller on our lawn grass) then we would use the grass around plants such as runner beans, courgettes, it best if the plant is a little bigger and you can scatter a thin layer around the plant as the will keep weeds down and it also retains water in the ground.
