My grapes tasted sour…

… And I ended up throwing them away. They were that bitter.

I was devastated.

I didn’t know where I had gone wrong.

I wondered if I was just a plain bad grape grower. Destined to be a failure. And at one point I seriously considered scrubbing my vines. And turning the area over to more fruit bushes. Or even erecting a  decking area.

The thing is when I moved into my new house it had a large garden. A large vegetable patch. Apple and pear trees. Blackcurrant bushes. Gooseberries. And tucked away in a sun trap corner there were five grape vines. Immediately I had visions of it over-loaded with grapes.

I imagined myself making my own wine. Making delicious fruit salads. Juicing them for a delicious thirst-quenching drink.

So the next spring I was keen to get my vines in tip-top growing condition. And I thought I did everything correctly. The weather was perfect for growing grapes that summer. And we had an ideal rainfall. I was really looking forward to my grape harvest.

But…

…I waited and waited for my grapes to ripen…

But they never grew big enough. And many that did fell off the vines. In fact, my vines only produced half a bucket of grapes. I was gutted. And despaired of being a successful grape grower.

I was on the cusp of ripping out my vines.

Boy am I glad I didn’t.
