Improve your home with a vegetable garden

Planting a vegetable garden can add a lovely homely feel to your home. That’s because a vegetable garden can transform your backyard from a piece of land not used to a area that produces delicious home grown vegetables that can put food on your table.

By having your own vegetable garden you’ll have total control over what type of vegetable you want to grow and harvest. You can also choose if you want to grow your vegetables with chemicals or choose to grow them organically.

Depending on how much space around your home you have your vegetable garden can be compact or much larger. If you don’t have a lot of space you can grow vegetables in pots or containers. Or you can add a raised bed or dig a area up to make a vegetable garden.

If you are a first-time vegetable gardener you may just want to start small, so you can you’re your gardening skills and even experiment to see which vegetable plants you want to grow or which vegetable plants thrive best in your garden. Then you can expand your garden further down the road.

Garden location

Vegetables prefer sunlight and warmth as this makes them grow much better. So find an area in the garden that gets several hours of direct sunlight per day.

Apart from a sunny spot you also want good drainage in your garden. If you don’t have good drainage then it might be better to make a raised bed or grow in containers.

Decide what vegetables to plant

Before you decide what vegetables to plant you may want to consider what you like to eat. There is no point growing peppers if you prefer tomatoes. So choose vegetables that you enjoy eating. Some vegetables you can growing on a continuous basis such as: salad leaves, lettuces, radishes, peas, French beans, rocket. Whilst other vegetables produce ones through the season – vegetables such as: cucumbers, peppers, sweetcorn, tomatoes, squash, leeks, produce. So decide what you like to eat and plan accordingly so that you won’t get a lot of waste.

It also a good idea to grow several different types of vegetables in your garden – so that you aren’t just waiting for one vegetable to produce for you. You can also try different varieties of seeds through the season as you might find one type of seed grows better then a different variety.
